Placer County Courthouse: Frequently Asked Questions
Essential "Boots on the Ground" Information from Richard Quiles
Q: Is there a children's waiting room?
A: Currently, there is no children's waiting room available at the Gibson Courthouse. It is highly recommended to arrange childcare, as the courtrooms can be stressful environments for minors.
Q: Can I attend my hearing remotely?
A: Placer County does offer remote appearances for some hearings via Zoom or CourtCall. However, for contested evidentiary hearings or trials, the judges typically require in-person attendance. Check with Richard's office before assuming you can stay home.
Q: Can I bring my cell phone into the courthouse?
A: Yes, you are permitted to bring your cell phone into the Howard G. Gibson Courthouse in Roseville, but there are strict rules for its use. Your phone must be silenced or turned off the moment you enter a courtroom. A ringing phone can lead to the bailiff confiscating the device or a stern warning from the judge.
Q: Am I allowed to take photos or videos inside the courthouse?
A: No. Under Placer County Local Rule 10.12, it is strictly prohibited to take photographs or record audio/video anywhere inside the building (including hallways and lobbies) without a written order from the judge.
Q: Can I show the judge text messages or photos on my phone as evidence?
A: You should not rely on your phone for evidence. Most judges will not handle your physical device. It is highly recommended that you print out any text messages, emails, or photos you wish to present to the court before you arrive.
Q: What happens if I am running late for my hearing?
A: The court starts promptly at 8:30 AM. If you are running late, contact Richard’s office immediately. Missing your "calendar call" (when the judge calls your name) can result in your case being moved to the end of the day or rescheduled entirely.
