Sacramento Courthouse FAQs
Essential "Boots on the Ground" Information from Richard Quiles
Q: Is there a children's waiting room at the Sacramento Courthouse?
A: Yes. Unlike many other courts, the Ridgeway Courthouse offers a free Children’s Waiting Room in Room 111 (first floor) for children ages 1 to 12. It is operated by the YMCA and provides a safe, supervised play environment while you are in your hearing. Space is limited, so it is still recommended to check availability or have a backup plan.
Q: Can I attend my Sacramento hearing remotely?
A: Sacramento Superior Court strongly encourages remote appearances via Zoom for most non-evidentiary hearings. You must file and serve a Notice of Remote Appearance (Form RA-010) at least five court days before your hearing. For trials or domestic violence restraining order hearings, the judge may still require you to appear in person at 3341 Power Inn Road.
Q: Can I bring my cell phone into the Sacramento Courthouse?
A: Yes, you are allowed to bring your cell phone into the building. However, it must be turned off or completely silenced before you enter any courtroom. Using your phone for any reason during your case without the judge's permission is strictly prohibited and can result in your device being confiscated by the bailiff.
Q: Am I allowed to take photos or videos inside the courthouse?
A: No. Under Local Rule 1.24, it is unlawful to photograph, record, or broadcast any part of the proceedings, the hallways, or the lobby. This includes taking screenshots if you are appearing via Zoom. Violating this rule can lead to a citation for contempt of court or significant monetary sanctions
Q: Can I show the judge text messages or photos on my phone as evidence?
A: No. You should never rely on your phone to present evidence. The court requires physical copies of any exhibits you want the judge to consider. You must print out all text messages, photos, or emails in triplicate (one for the judge, one for the opposing party, and one for yourself) before you arrive at the courthouse.
Q: What happens if I am running late for my hearing?
A: Most family law departments in Sacramento start their "calendar call" exactly at 8:30 AM or 1:30 PM. If you are not present when your name is called, the judge may move forward without you or reschedule the matter. If you are stuck at the security line or parking lot, call Richard’s office immediately so we can notify the bailiff.
