Parking & Security (The "Stress Reducers")

Parking and Getting Through Security
  • Parking is Free: There is a massive, free public lot directly in front of the Howard G. Gibson Courthouse. You do not need to worry about meters or validation.
  • The Security Line: Everyone must pass through a metal detector. To speed up your entry:
    • Leave the "Pocket Tools" at Home: Even small pocket knives or pepper spray will be confiscated and can delay your hearing.
    • Clear Bags Help: While not mandatory, using a clear bag makes the inspection process much faster.
    • Arrival Time: Aim to be at the front doors by 8:10 AM for an 8:30 AM hearing to account for the morning security rush.

Inside the Courtroom

Navigating the Gibson Courthouse Interiors
  • Finding Your Department: Family law cases are typically held in Departments 30 through 44 on the second floor.
  • The "Ready" List: Once you reach your courtroom, check the paper calendar posted next to the door. If your name isn't there, check the digital monitors in the main lobby.
  • Checking In: Walk into the courtroom (if a hearing isn't already in progress) and check in with the Bailiff or the Courtroom Clerk. Let them know you are present and if you are represented by Richard Quiles.
  • The 2026 Update: Be aware that the court is currently undergoing major audio/visual upgrades. Some "Long Cause" (longer) hearings may be temporarily moved to Department 50 in Rocklin. Always double-check your hearing notice!

Nearby Resources

  • Food/Coffee: There is no cafeteria inside the building (only vending machines on the 1st and 2nd floors). If you have a long break, the Nugget Market plaza and Chipotle are less than 2 miles away.
  • Wi-Fi: Free public Wi-Fi is available, but the signal can be weak inside the actual courtrooms. Download any digital evidence (emails/texts) to your phone's local storage before entering.

Placer County Courthouse: Frequently Asked Questions

Essential "Boots on the Ground" Information from Richard Quiles

Q: Is there a children's waiting room?

A: Currently, there is no children's waiting room available at the Gibson Courthouse. It is highly recommended to arrange childcare, as the courtrooms can be stressful environments for minors.

Q: Can I attend my hearing remotely?

A: Placer County does offer remote appearances for some hearings via Zoom or CourtCall. However, for contested evidentiary hearings or trials, the judges typically require in-person attendance. Check with Richard's office before assuming you can stay home.

Q: Can I bring my cell phone into the courthouse?

A: Yes, you are permitted to bring your cell phone into the Howard G. Gibson Courthouse in Roseville, but there are strict rules for its use. Your phone must be silenced or turned off the moment you enter a courtroom. A ringing phone can lead to the bailiff confiscating the device or a stern warning from the judge.

Q: Am I allowed to take photos or videos inside the courthouse?

A: No. Under Placer County Local Rule 10.12, it is strictly prohibited to take photographs or record audio/video anywhere inside the building (including hallways and lobbies) without a written order from the judge.

Q: Can I show the judge text messages or photos on my phone as evidence?

A: You should not rely on your phone for evidence. Most judges will not handle your physical device. It is highly recommended that you print out any text messages, emails, or photos you wish to present to the court before you arrive.

Q: What happens if I am running late for my hearing?

A: The court starts promptly at 8:30 AM. If you are running late, contact Richard’s office immediately. Missing your "calendar call" (when the judge calls your name) can result in your case being moved to the end of the day or rescheduled entirely.
