Richard Quiles Attorney At Law

Richard Quiles is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area where he attended Notre Dame de Namur University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and helped form the campus’ Political Science Association. The university eventually bestowed on Richard the Outstanding Service Award for all his efforts and service in the Political Science and History Department. Richard then went on to obtain his Juris Doctorate, with a concentration in business, from McGeorge School of Law. While there, Richard served as the treasurer for the Latino Law Students Association and Team Lead for the Bankruptcy Clinic. Richard now is a multi-faceted attorney working primarily in our Family Law department.

Common Questions About Family Law

  • How long does it take to finalize a divorce in California? By law, a divorce cannot be finalized until at least six months and one day after the initial papers are served. However, complex cases involving property or contested custody often take longer.
  • What is the difference between Legal and Physical custody? Legal custody gives you the right to make major decisions (schooling, medical care, religion). Physical custody refers to where the child actually lives. Both can be "joint" or "sole" depending on the child's best interests.
  • Can my child choose which parent they want to live with? In California, there is no "magic age" where a child chooses. However, if a child is 14 or older, the court must let them address the judge directly if they wish, though the judge still makes the final decision based on their overall well-being.
  • How is "Alimony" (Spousal Support) calculated? For temporary support, courts often use a formula. For permanent support, judges look at many factors, including the length of the marriage, each spouse’s earning capacity, and the standard of living during the marriage.
  • What happens if my ex-spouse violates a court order? If an order for custody, visitation, or support is being ignored, you can file a "Contempt of Court" or a "Request for Order" to enforce the existing rules.
